If you’re at work and need to be smart and dinner-ready in the blink of an eye, there are a few ways to switch dress codes for evening. First, wear something plain and beautifully cut (not fitted) that translates well into the cocktail hour. It will be the perfect blank canvas to layer on glamorous details like chandelier earrings, statement cuffs, cool clutches or amazing heels. Literally, let your hair down … or twist it into a chignon. Show bare ankles or some décolletage – it’s as important to subtract as it is to add.
And remember, more is more in the shoe stakes …

After Hours Sparkle

Update staple black trousers, seeking out ones with great details, like these, with a kick-flare. Add after-hours sparkle with a divine jet-beaded cape, fringed with ostrich feathers, fabulous satin shoes and a feminine dress watch.

Black Clara lambswool polo-neck sweater, €495; black Piper kick-flare cropped wool trousers, €495; both Louise Kennedy, 56 Merrion Square, Dublin 2; Brown Thomas Dublin.  Black Maia wool crepe cape with embellishment and feather trim, €5,995, at LOUISE KENNEDY, as before. Black Raissa satin-crepe shoes, Christian Louboutin, €945, at Brown Thomas. Black Equestrian Bouclé watch, Longines, €3,310, at Weir & Sons.
