The Victoria Beckham midi black column dress is packaged beautifully in layers of tissue paper, heightening my excitement at wearing it for a gala dinner. The added bonus is I spent a fraction of the usual cost on this new outfit, which I sourced from Designer Room. With the rise of social media making it more difficult to get away with wearing the same thing twice, Rhoda McDonagh saw a gap in the market. After 16 years in the corporate world, she recently decided to set up Designer Room. In Sandymount, it offers a selection of dresses which cater for every occasion – from business meetings to weddings, and costs from €60 – €170 for a four-day hire. I was impressed with the range and collection of designers on offer, which included Prada, Gucci, Oscar de la Renta and many more.

“I cater for a lot of last-minute requests for those who need a dress for same-day or next-day delivery,” says McDonagh. Her most popular dresses are those by Roland Mouret, Victoria Beckham, David Koma and Matthew Williamson, with many clients now on their tenth hire. “I work around busy schedules, making private appointments to suit clients, whether early in the morning, late in the evenings or at weekends. Dresses are in pristine condition and McDonagh is a good sounding board for what suits and what doesn’t. The proof is, as they say, in the pudding. Compliments flowed when I debuted by VB dress, though I kept mum on its origins.
