The glamour days of clicking open a compact at the dinner table are past – these days we’re far more likely to put on our make-up on the bus. But whether you’re surreptitiously dashing on lipstick and heels at your desk, or doing a quick make-up touch-up in the taxi, everyone has their ways to get ready fast. A primer and long-lasting foundation is key for some. An alternative is to do a quick blitz with micellar water, then whack on some serum, waking skin up and make it look instantly glowier for evening. I also swear by a dash of metallic colour on the eyes, or extra eyeliner. And a strong matte lip colour works wonders, all by itself.

Hair waves

Sort your hair and everything else falls into place. A few waves will add a bit of finish to your look. At our shoot, Graham Molloy (above), stylist at Brown Sugar, our partners at Look The Business 2018, gave us his tips for a great desk to dinner look. “It’s all about natural enhancement. I’d definitely invest in a big barrel tongs or a large wand. Divide the hair in two for the parting and go right down the back, bringing both sections to the front. Then curl all the hair back off the face on the corresponding sides. Don’t be too fussy when curling – use big sections and leave the ends that little bit straighter. To prep the hair, I sprayed it with L’Oréal Techni.Art Constructor. Finally I suggest spraying your hair with Tecni.Art Crêpage de Chignon (below) before running your hands right through it; this is the perfect product to have in the drawer in the office as it enhances a tousled, natural, beachy effect; it can also double as a dry shampoo.” Since Brown Sugar salons have late openings until 8pm (see the website for details), you could always stop in and let the pros do this for you. And make-up wise, we highly recommend booking a session with top make-up artist Dearbhla Keenan; whether you need tips on updating your look, or a complete beauty bag overhaul, Keenan and her team are brilliant on translating catwalk looks to real life. Arm yourself with a capsule kit from their MUD range and you’re good to go …

Scent shift

For evening, many people lash on a heavy floral fragrance or something rich and sweet. Do something different: unisex Terre d’Hermès Eau Intense Vetiver is bright with bergamot and a lasting earthy vetiver and patchouli warmth – it’s divine. Your hair might be a mess and your eyeliner wonky, but if you smell this good no one will notice. €108.

Glow to go

Rather than layering on more bronzer or highlighter for evening, try lightening up instead. Vichy Minéral 89 Hyaluronic Acid Daily Booster is an instant hydrator and works well as a primer or skin prep (there’s no silicone or filler ingredients so it won’t flake off); €16.50. If you need to conceal around the nose, YSL All Hours Foundation Stick is perfect for quick touch-ups  (left, €39.50) – keep it in your bag. If you have the luxury of 20 minutes, do a Seoulista Beauty Gold Glow Instant Facial mask. €14.95;

Powder & paint

If you play it safe with nude lip colours for day time, amp it up for evening with a richer berry or red. Chanel’s lip powders, launched earlier this year, are among my all-time favourite things, and these new Rouge Allure Liquid Powders deliver the same softly blurred, powdered matte look, just in a tube with sponge applicator. Quick and immediate to use, the six colours are all utterly beautiful, from dusty pale pink to blackberry, and feel really creamy on the lips, despite the powdery finish. These are already being copied by every other brand, but this is the real thing. €36.
